The method of modifying the local machine name must be familiar to everyone. But have you ever tried to modify the machine name remotely? It is not easy to implement this operation in all versions of Windows before Windows Server 2003 (Windows 2003 for short) and it needs the support of a terminal server. The Web access interface provided by Windows 2003 effectively simplifies this process allowing everyone to easily complete the operation of remotely modifying the Windows 2003 machine name. In this way you don't have to go to the machine to be modified to operate as before.

Tip: The system used by the remote client does not have any restrictions as long as the user can access the Internet and run the IE browser. The machine whose name is to be modified remotely must use the Windows 2003 system.

On the remote client open the IE browser and enter 's://Windows 2003 server IP address:8098' in the address bar such as 's://192.168.0.1:8098' ; where “192.168.0.1” is the IP address of the Windows 2003 server “8098” is the port number used for remote maintenance (please note that access to the Windows 2003 server uses the “s” protocol which is not commonly used The “” protocol). In the login dialog box that pops up enter the administrator user name and password and click the 'OK' button to log in to the Web access interface management interface.

Next in the “Welcome” interface click “Set Server Name” to connect enter the “Server Identification” page and then in the “Server Name” column Enter the new machine name click the 'OK' button and restart the Windows 2003 server to make the setting effective.

Tip: For security reasons Windows 2003 does not provide a Web access interface by default and must be set manually. On the Windows 2003 server click “Start→Settings→Control Panel” run “Add or Remove Programs” and switch to the “Add/Remove Windows Components” page in the pop-up window. In the “Windows Components Wizard” dialog box enter the “Application Server→Internet Information Service (IIS)→World Wide Web Service” option select the “Remote Management (HTML)” component and finally click“ OK” button.
