Fault analysis
Did the system damage the D drive after reinstalling? If there is a problem with the disk the system will prompt that the disk is not ready or formatted. Open the 'Disk Management' option in the 'Computer Management' window and find that Disk D is in good condition and has a space of about 3GB which is basically the same as the total file capacity. It seems that it is not a physical or logical error of the disk and the 'Access denied' message prompted by the system also proves this point.

Recall carefully after the original Windows Server 2003 system was installed the D drive was shared for work convenience but the file security was taken into account so the 'Administrators' user group was set to the D drive Have full control permissions and delete the default access permissions of the 'Everyone' group on Disk D. It seems that this situation is related to the security of the NTFS drive.

In the Explorer right-click the D drive select 'Properties' to open the 'Local Disk (D:) Properties' dialog box and select the 'Security' tab You can see that there is an unknown user with a question mark in the window. This should be the 'Administrator' user in the original Windows Server 2003 system (as shown in Figure 2). This user can access the D drive in the original system but after installing the new system the original user cannot be recognized by the current system.

Troubleshooting

Click the \u0026ldquo;Add\u0026rdquo; button in the dialog box in Figure 2 to open the \u0026ldquo;Select user computer or group\u0026rdquo; dialog Box the window shows all the user group names in the local technical machine. Find the \u0026ldquo;Administrators\u0026rdquo; user group click the \u0026ldquo;Add\u0026rdquo; button and add the administrator user group to the list box below the window.


Click the \u0026ldquo;OK\u0026rdquo; button to return to the \u0026ldquo;Local Disk (D:) Properties\u0026rdquo; dialog box then you can see that the administrator user group has been added to the local disk In the access permissions of D select the \u0026ldquo;Complete Control\u0026rarr;Allow\u0026rdquo; check box in the \u0026ldquo;Permissions\u0026rdquo; window to give the administrator group all permissions on Disk D (as shown in Figure 3). Select the unknown user with the question mark and click the 'Delete' button to delete the unknown user from the permission list of Disk D.

Click the \u0026ldquo;OK\u0026rdquo; button to save the settings and the D drive can be accessed again.

Summary of experience

(1) Keep calm when a problem occurs carefully recall the previous operation and analyze the situation after finding the cause of the failure then prescribe the right medicine. This can save time and reduce unnecessary losses.
(2) Set access permissions to drives or folders in the original system and delete the 'Everyone' user group which causes some drives or folders to be inaccessible after reinstalling the Windows 2000/XP/2003 system the reason. Each user in the system has a unique security identifier \u0026ldquo;SID\u0026rdquo; so new users cannot access drives or folders with permissions set. Of course you can set the 'Security' option only for drives with NTFS partitions for the system and this problem does not occur for drives with FAT partitions.
(3) If the system is Windows XP there is no 'Security' tab in the drive or folder properties by default. Open the 'Folder Options' dialog in the 'Control Panel' Box under the 'Advanced Settings' on the 'View' tab uncheck the 'Use simple file sharing (recommended)' check box.
