How to partition an external hard drive and a summary of three reliable ways to partition an external hard drive

External hard drive just bought when there is no partition, that is, the entire hard drive on a zone, so we have to partition, some people may ask why partition, in fact, External hard drive with the addition and deletion of files and file fragmentation, partitioning can prevent hard disk errors and file fragmentation and other reasons generated by the loss of data, in addition to partitioning after You can put different files into different partitions for easy access and management, and partitioning can also maximize the protection of your data, a single partition bad channel other partitions of the data has a low chance of problems, today we will teach you 3 different ways to External hard drive to partition operations.

Method 1: Use system disk management to partition

If the external hard drive has a capacity of 1T, it is dangerous not to partition it. For example, if you need to format the hard drive once, you need to back up everything in the hard drive, and it's troublesome to back up a large capacity. So give the External hard drive two partitions and three zones, one with 30G capacity and the other with the remaining capacity. So I put all the important files in the 30G partition.

First open your start menu, find "My Computer", some people don't have it, then find "Computer"

Then we right-click on the "Computer", but in the right-click menu, select "Manage"

This time open the computer management, find the storage option here, double-click to open

The Storage dialog box opens and you see a Disk Management (Local) here, double click on it to open it

Here you will see the Disk Manager that we will use. Here you can see your computer hard drive and External hard drive, the G drive below is my External hard drive, let's set up the partition

First backup the External hard drive, copy all its contents to your computer, then we right-click on the drive and select (Delete Volume)

You will see a warning prompting you to back up your hard drive, click "Yes" on it

Then you will see that disk 1, the size of the unallocated area can not be found is 465G, which is our External hard drive, "unallocated" area right-click

In the right-click menu, select "New Simple Volume".

Open a new wizard, click "Next"

In this step, you need to assign the drive letter, we'll default to the G given by the system, then click Next

Here, we select the "File System" as NTFS and click Next

After seeing the success message, our task is done, click the "Finish" button

We see that I have allocated 30G of space in the External hard drive to the G disk, and I need to create a few more partitions to divide the remaining unallocated area in the same way, by creating a new volume.

Finally we see that I have divided two partitions to disk 1, and here the tutorial ends.

Method 2: Use diskgenius to partition the external hard drive

  1、Download DiskGenius free version

  2、Unzip DiskGenius

Double-click the DiskGenius application directly after decompression to open the DiskGenius hard drive partitioning tool without installation.

  3、Enter External hard drive partition

Select the external hard drive to be partitioned, be careful not to select your hard drive, click on the top left quick partition, you can enter the partition settings interface.

4, set the partition parameters, in order to simplify the direct selection of fast partition

(1). Set the number of partitions, can be divided into several zones at once is very convenient, here choose to divide into 4 zones.

(2). Set the partition size and name, now generally choose ntfs partition, so you can zoom in on a single file of 4G.

5, point OK after the implementation of hard disk partition

Wait for the partition to complete, very fast.

  6, hard drive partitioning results

This will be divided into four zones, all NTFS partitions, is not easier and faster than using the system comes with the partition, and this software is free.

Method 3, use the partition assistant to external hard drive partition

Partition Assistant's Quick Partition feature is used to quickly repartition a disk, and it works well on PCs, servers and PE systems. It is suitable for partitioning a new hard drive or repartitioning a hard drive with existing partitions. You can specify the size, type, volume label, etc. of each partition. Partitioning and formatting of hard disks can be done with a few operations. If you do not change the default settings for the number, type, size, etc. of partitions, you can re-partition and format the disc by opening the Quick Partition dialog and pressing OK.

For External hard drive partitions you can use One-Click Quick Partition feature, which is very easy. First of all, download the latest professional free version of Partition Assistant, unzip it directly and you can use it, the main program is PartAssist.exe, open it with the following interface.

Then please click on the "Quick Partition" icon in the toolbar at the top of the Partition Assistant interface as shown above. After clicking it, the Quick Partition window will appear as follows.

  1. select the disk, select your External hard drive, mine is disk 2

The operation is shown in the figure.

External hard drive we generally do not need to modify the default disk type directly, the number of partitions to determine their own, partition size can also be adjusted by themselves.

Also please note that if the partition already exists on the disk, all partitions on the disk will be deleted after performing the fast partition operation. 2.

  2. Number of partitions

Under "Select disc", select the number of partitions you want to create.

  How to do it.

You can press 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 keys to quickly select the number of partitions.       It can also be operated by mouse click.

After selection, the right half of the dialog box immediately displays the list of the corresponding number of partitions.

  3. Types of disks

In this panel, select the MBR disk type or GPT disk type and decide whether to check the "Rebuild MBR for this disk" box and choose the partition alignment to which sector.

MBR disk: MBR disks support up to 2TB, if the disk is larger than 2TB, choosing MBR format will cause waste of disk capacity, it is recommended to choose GPT format.

GPT disk: For disks larger than 2TB or if you need to install the system to this disk and boot using UEFI mode, it is recommended to choose GPT format.

Rebuild MBR for this disk: If an MBR-based boot manager exists on the disk and you still need to keep it, do not check this option.

Partition alignment to: In general, solid state drives (SSDs) are optionally 4K aligned, i.e. 8 sectors. This item has little impact on mechanical hard drives and can be unchecked.

  4. Partition Parameters

The "Partition Parameters" shows the basic parameters of each partition, including partition type, size, volume label, whether it is the primary partition, etc.

  Resize partitions

The software will automatically set a default value for each partition size according to the hard disk size. You can also set the size of each partition by entering the value yourself. After clicking "Default Size", it will automatically revert to the default size.       Adjusting Partition File System

You can choose between NTFS and FAT32 file system, which does not support partitions larger than 2TB and does not support storing individual files larger than 4GB, but FAT32 is more compatible, while NTFS is more stable and secure and supports partitions larger than 2TB and individual files larger than 4GB. In general, it is recommended that users choose the NTFS file system.       Adjusting volume labels

The software sets a default volume label for each partition, which can be selected or changed by the user, or by clicking the "Remove all volume labels" button to remove the volume labels from all partitions and then set the volume labels themselves.     Decide whether the volume is the primary partition or not

If you decide that the volume is the primary partition, check "Primary partition"; otherwise, leave it unchecked. If you create 4 partitions on an MBR disc, you can set all 4 partitions as primary partitions, if you create more than 4 partitions, you can set up to 3 partitions as primary partitions. If you choose GPT disks, this item is not optional, because GPT disks do not have the concept of primary logical partition, and all created partitions are "primary" by default.

After the settings are completed, you can visually see how the disc will look like after fast partitioning in the preview window below. Click the "Start" button to implement one-click fast partitioning, if there is already a partition on the disc, a confirmation dialog will pop up (if there is no partition on the disc, this dialog will not pop up), as shown in the following figure.

Click Yes to continue, No to cancel.

After you click Yes, you will start partitioning, and it will take a few seconds at most to partition the disk, which is almost the same as diskgenius.
